Love Locks Bridge
Lock in the Love
All over the world, love lock locations invite people to attach a padlock engraved with names or initials to a fence, gate, bridge, or railing as a symbol of everlasting devotion. The key is then thrown away—into a river, ocean, over a cliff, or sealed in a box—never to be retrieved again. In many cultures, it is believed that when two people truly love one another and place a lock together, their bond is sealed forever. The origins of this tradition trace back centuries, when couples would take oaths of loyalty by clasping hands through looped chains.
In Paris, France, lovers famously attached padlocks to the Pont des Arts bridge and threw the keys into the Seine River below. One popular legend says the custom began when a couple separated by World War I reunited on the bridge with locks engraved with their names. In several mountainous regions of China, couples place love locks on cliffside bridges and cast the keys into deep valleys below. There, the tradition blends modern romance with ancient beliefs in fate, permanence, and unbreakable commitment.
Many also place locks to honor children at birth or loved ones who have passed away. Whether for yourself or someone else, love locks are a way of declaring that love endures—long after time, distance, or even life itself has passed.
